Love in Islam Quotes: 10 Reminders for Keeping Love Alive

Love in Islam between a husband and wife is to be cherished and nurtured. A far cry perhaps from the messaging we often see on our screens and in so-called news articles about the oppression of Muslim wives at the hands of overbearing husbands.

Please. I’ve been married for 9 years now, almost a decade (!) and have 2 young children with my husband. What a huge span of time to be in a close, devoted relationship with one person.

Don’t get me wrong though. It has hardly been an easy 9 years, especially after we had kids. 

Our relationship has been through a lot and in my lowest moments, I have considered divorce as an escape. 

Relationships can get strained and difficult and it can be hard to remember why you love your partner, especially when the burdens and responsibilities of daily life take their toll.

I’m sure I’m not the only married Muslim woman to feel this way at some point.

However, when my husband and I got married, we promised each other to try to remember our roots, the foundation to return to for solid footing when it felt like our relationship was cracking up and breaking beneath us.

That foundation is realising that everything starts with and returns to Allah.

In Islam, Allah wants us to be in successful, loving relationships. It is one manifestation of worship and one of the signs (ayat) he has created for us in the cosmos to remember him.

In Islam, an investment in our relationship and love is an investment in our relationship and love with Allah.

Isn’t that worth putting the effort in for?

With that in mind, I have collected 10 quotes or verses from the Qur’an about love. These are beautiful reminders of the value of love between a husband and wife in Islam. 

There are many more verses about love in Islam that are more widely about love of and from Allah, though I haven’t included these in my list below in order to focus on the marital bond.

Love in Islam – Quote #1

Another of His signs is that He created spouses from among yourselves for you to live with in tranquillity: He ordained love and kindness between you. There truly are signs in this for those who reflect.

The Qur’an, Ar-Rum (The Romans) 30:21

This is perhaps the quote that most strongly reflects the importance of love in Islam. It is so crucial that Allah actually commands that love and kindness be part of the marital relationship.

Love in Islam – Quote #2

Live with them in accordance with what is fair and kind: if you dislike them, it may well be that you dislike something in which God has put much good.

The Qur’an, An-Nisa (The Women) 4:19

For me, this verse is a reminder that marriage can be difficult and sometimes we may dislike our partners. That’s normal. But also reminds me to remember that Allah knows best and there is good there… if only we reflect.

Love in Islam – Quote #3

It is He who created you all from one soul, and from it made its mate so that he might find comfort in her.

The Qur’an, Al-A’raf (The Heights) 7:189

‘Created you all from one soul’ – the very definition of love, oneness and harmony. 

Love in Islam – Quote #4

You [believers] are permitted to lie with your wives during the night of the fast: they are [close] as garments to you, as you are to them (…) you can lie with them– seek what God has ordained for you.

The Qur’an, Al-Baqarah (The Cow) 2:187

Again, another command from Allah to strengthen ties between wife and husband. This time, Allah commands intimacy (in the context of giving permission to make love during the nights of Ramadan). This quote recognises the importance of physical intimacy within a marriage – truly liberating.

Love in Islam – Quote #5

People, be mindful of your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it created its mate, and from the pair of them spread countless men and women far and wide.

A perfect reminder that a husband and wife should be a team. 

Love in Islam – Quote #6

Seek the life to come by means of what God has granted you, but do not neglect your rightful share in this world. Do good to others as God has done good to you.

Allah reminds us that seeking the reward of paradise is wonderful, but we can’t do that by forgetting this world and all that involves. Relationships in this world are a huge part of our lives… we must invest in our relationships through goodness and love.

Love in Islam – Quote #7

The love of desirable things is made alluring for men– women, children, gold and silver treasures piled up high, horses with fine markings, livestock, and farmland– these may be the joys of this life, but God has the best place to return to.

The Qur’an, Al-Imran (The Family of Imran) 3:14

Allah never suggests that the pleasures of this world are negative. On the contrary, He acknowledges their value and the joy they bring – specifically mentioning the allure of relationships – but only if they lead back to Allah. He is the ultimate goal.

You may dislike something although it is good for you, or like something although it is bad for you: God knows and you do not.

For me, reading this in the context of marriage, this is a stunning reminder of the power of understanding, empathy and repair.

Love in Islam – Quote #9

The Lord of Mercy will give love to those who believe and do righteous deeds. 

The Qur’an, Al-Maryam (Mary) 19:96

Allah, the source of all love is inextricably linked with mercy. A powerful connection, particularly when reflecting on marriage.

Love in Islam – Quote #10

Far better and more lasting is what God will give to those who believe and trust in their Lord; who shun great sins and gross indecencies; who forgive when they are angry; respond to their Lord; keep up the prayer; conduct their affairs by mutual consultation; give to others out of what We have provided for them; and defend themselves when they are oppressed.

The Qur’an, Ash-Shura (Counsel) 42:36-39 

While not explicitly about love, I see this quote as the perfect roadmap to a successful marriage.
